Asphalt Paving Starting May 20th

Asphalt paving activities for the Bank Intercounty Drain project will commence in your area on Wednesday, May 20. During the paving process, trucks will deliver hot-mix asphalt to pavers along the roadway, which will lay the material down in a thin, uniform layer that will then be compacted as it cools. Compacting the material properly creates a durable, long-lasting surface. Compaction of the asphalt material is performed with several passes of different types of rollers, including a vibratory roller. These rollers vibrate between about 40 and 60 times per second, with an amplitude of about 1/32 of an inch. While the vibrations can be felt by people nearby, these vibrations are typical of a road reconstruction project. The magnitude of vibrations decreases rapidly with distance from the roller. Typically, four to five passes of the equipment are necessary to compact each section of roadway before the roller moves on.
