May Construction Update
Work commenced on the Saginaw Highway box sewer so each of the five divisions of the project are now in progress.
Frost laws also lifted last month so crews are no longer restricted on how much dirt they can haul.
Continue reading for brief updates on each portion of this four-year project to replace the Bank Intercounty Drain.
Abatement and Demolition
Demolition at the former school at 4300 W. Saginaw Highway is nearing completion. The building walls are gone, and the only areas remaining are part of the foundation and a service barn.
Stormwater Detention Ponds
Excavation of the pond will begin to ramp up as outdoor conditions improve. Michigan frost laws were lifted, so there is no longer a limit on the weight of spoils that can be hauled off-site.
Outlet Storm Sewer Replacement
The site of the former school will continue to have a flurry of activity. In addition to the final demolition stages mentioned above, crews poured an inlet structure that connected the 60" main line storm sewer to the new detention pond.
Crews completed installation of a 24" storm sewer from north of Willow Hwy. to E. Thomas L. Parkway. The contractor will start installing the water main along Elizabeth St. and then move to Waverly Rd.
Saginaw Highway Box Sewer
To prepare for construction of the Saginaw Highway box sewer, crews installed a laydown area where the former school was located. A laydown area is a designated location for temporarily storing, receiving, and assembling building materials, tools and heavy equipment.
Box sewer installation is underway out of the detention pond. The storm sewer, shaped like a box instead of a cylinder, starts at the detention pond and will travel east down the center of Saginaw Highway then up to Dibble Avenue.
Traffic control measures will be placed on Saginaw Hwy within the next few weeks.
Neighborhood Storm Sewer Pipe Replacement
Storm sewer installation on St. Joseph Highway heading west toward Harvest Lane is underway. Road building crews are working on reconstructing Otis St., Hume Blvd. and Blanche Ave.
