Assessment Prepayment Information

Opportunity to Prepay Special Assessment to Avoid Interest

After the April 4, 2025, Eaton County Day of Review of Apportionments for the Bank

Intercounty Drain, an Apportionment of Benefits was signed, and a special assessment for the Bank Intercounty Drain will be placed on your winter taxes beginning this year (December 2025). The total amount will be spread over 30 years and will include interest.

Letters with the assessment amount were mailed to property owners last week. The assessment amount included on the letters is the total principal amount and does not include interest. Property owners may prepay all or a portion of the assessment principal amount to avoid/reduce interest charges.

Special Assessment Prepayment FAQs

Why would I want to prepay my assessment?

Prepaying your assessment will avoid/reduce interest charges. You have the opportunity to prepay the total or a portion of the total assessment amount by May 9, 2025.

Why is there interest?

Due to the size of the project, financing is required. The Bank Intercounty Drain Drainage Board will seek bids for the borrowing. Interest (once known) will be placed on any amount of money that is borrowed. The interest charges will decrease each year as the principal amount is paid off.

What is the interest rate?

Unfortunately, we do not know the interest rate at this time. The actual interest rate will only be known after the prepayments have been received and after bids from financing institutions are reviewed. There is a potential to refinance should future interest rates go down.

How do I prepay my assessment?

Property owners can prepay their assessment by mail or in person by May 9, 2025 to the county in which the parcel is located.
